Merrion to Develop Insulin Drugs with Novo

Novo Nordisk signed an agreement to develop oral insulin analogues using Merrion Pharmaceuticals’ Gastrointestinal Permeation Enhancement Technology (GIPET) in a deal valued at €45 M (US$58 M). Novo Nordisk is seeking alternative strategies for diabetes after abandoning its inhaled insulin product.

Johnson & Johnson Strengthens its Biosurgical Position by Acquiring Omrix

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has gained a series of innovative biosurgical products with its acquisition of Omrix, its partner of five years, for US$438 M. The two companies already have a marketing agreement for Omrix’s flagship product, but with this acquisition, J&J can now use its marketing skills to sell other Omrix products while Omrix focuses on developing novel biosurgical products.

Cash-strapped TorreyPines Divests its Alzheimer’s Disease Developments

In order to raise cash to progress its clinical developments, TorreyPines Therapeutics is disposing its Alzheimer’s developments through two recently signed deals. The beneficiaries are Eisai, which has acquired the genetics programme, and QR Pharma, which has licensed worldwide rights to three compounds, Posiphen™, bisnorcymcerine and phenserine.
